I think a lot about great style is showcasing who you are as a person, and highlighting the pieces and accessories that tell your story. But let’s be honest- there is a serious art form to bookcase styling.

Good styling can totally make or break a bookcase, so I’m going to let you in on some styling secrets and tricks that make your selves insta-worthy.

Step 1

Start with the Books. This may seem obvious, but some people like to jump ahead and start with layering back to front This may work for some people, but the most successful styling I’ve seen start with books as the foundation. I like to create a grid within my bookcase (usually three columns) and zig zag the books on each shelf. It’s also nice to mix up the heights with some standing and some lying flat.

Step 2

Add pictures and art. Once the books are placed, this is the time to add in layers and depth. Mix in a variety of types and sizes to really create visual interest.

Step 3

Finish with small accessories. Like the cherry on top, the small accessories are what add the final details and dimension to your shelf styling. A good rule of thumb I like to use is a 1:1 ratio- for every stack of books add an object. This makes sure things don’t get too consistent and really allows a person to showcase other mementos they love.
